Everyone loves a summer beach vacation, but we’ll share a little secret with you:  fall is when Holden Beach truly shines. The temperatures are cooler but still beautiful, the crowds are lighter, and the sunsets somehow feel more magical. It’s the perfect season for slowing down, exploring the outdoors, and savoring the best of the North Carolina coast – including some truly delicious fall flavors.

Whether it’s a picnic lunch, a seafood feast on the deck, a cozy meal made with local ingredients, or a family dinner at a local waterfront restaurant - the dining and cuisine adventures at Holden Beach are some of our favorite parts of fall.

Savoring the Flavors of Fall at the Beach

Fall on the coast means it’s officially oyster season - a beloved time when local seafood is a favorite feature and families and friends gather for oyster roasts. Flounder, trout, red drum, and shrimp are also more plentiful in the fall, making it a fantastic time to enjoy the catch of the day.

Autumn is also one of the best times for saltwater fishing at Holden Beach. As the water temperatures begin to cool, fish become more active and easier to catch, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Whether you are casting from the surf, dropping a line off the pier, or heading out on a chartered boat, it’s a great opportunity to catch your own dinner - and make a memory while you’re at it.

But it’s not just seafood that takes center stage. Fall brings a change in the air that naturally shifts our cravings toward richer, cozier flavors. Think of grilled dinners enjoyed with the sun setting in the background, bowls of clam chowder shared on the deck, or an al fresco feast of fish tacos accompanied by a cool ocean breeze.

Enjoying Meals Together at Your Vacation Rental

There’s something extra satisfying about cooking and dining in your vacation rental - especially in the fall. With local seafood markets like Old Ferry Seafood and Holden Beach Seafood just a short drive away, it’s easy to stock up on fresh shrimp, oysters, or the catch of the day and fire up the grill at your rental. Old Ferry also provides low-country seafood boils prepared ahead of time, so the only thing required is to pick it up and throw it in the oven when you return to your home away from home. Call ahead of time to reserve your tray.

Grilling on the deck as the sun sets, sharing a big brunch around the table, or creating your own low-country boil at night under the stars - these are the memories that stick.

Local produce stands and farmers’ markets make it easy to find ingredients to round out your meal. Brunswick County has a variety of roadside gems offering late-season tomatoes, sweet corn, okra, collard greens, squash, and other local seasonal favorites.

Stock up on ingredients for a cozy breakfast at your beach house or grab a few goodies for an impromptu afternoon picnic. If you find something truly special, consider bringing a taste of Holden Beach home with you.

Walking Adventures and Picnic Lunches

Fall weather was made for picnics, and Holden Beach offers no shortage of scenic spots. Pack some sandwiches or charcuterie and head to one of the island’s three Holden Golden Memory Mailboxes for a quiet moment of reflection.

The mailbox on Sailfish Drive is the easiest to reach and sits along the edge of a beautiful park on the Intracoastal Waterway. The East End mailbox requires a longer walk from the parking area, but it’s filled with opportunities to spot local wildlife and take in scenic views. The West End mailbox is the farthest of the three, but the peaceful, secluded setting makes the journey worthwhile – just be mindful that access is often easier at lower tides.

You can always picnic a bit inland at a nature park or walking trail. The Shallotte Riverwalk and Southport’s Waterfront Park both offer benches and trails ideal for sipping cider or nibbling snacks with a view.

Food Tastes Better on the Water

Everyone knows that a sandwich always tastes better when enjoyed on the water. Fall is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy some of Holden Beach’s most popular watersport activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, or boating. With mild temperatures and fewer crowds, it's an ideal season to explore by water.

Take advantage of local watersport rental options and head out on a paddleboard, kayak, or even a pontoon boat for the day. Bring a cooler with your favorite lunch and drift through the Lockwood Folly River or Intracoastal Waterway, spotting birds, dolphins, and maybe even a few fish along the way. It will be a floating feast surrounded by coastal beauty, and perhaps a favorite new memory.

Cozy Sips and Sweet Treats

Cooler evenings call for warm drinks and indulgent desserts. Sip hot coffee or cocoa on your vacation rental's deck as the stars emerge or enjoy a sweet treat.

Pick up a cinnamon roll from a local bakery, a pint of fall-flavored ice cream from a local shop, or bake a fall dessert. A warm apple crisp shared with loved ones may just become a new favorite fall beach tradition on Holden Beach!

Enjoying Local Waterfront Dining Options

Cooler temps make fall an enjoyable time for outdoor dining, and Holden Beach has plenty of waterfront restaurants to enjoy a delicious meal with a view. From laid-back seafood shacks to casual waterfront spots with live music, you can grab a meal and soak in the scenery.

Wherever you decide to enjoy your meal together, we recommend ordering the catch of the day or asking your server what’s fresh. With fewer crowds in the fall, it’s easier to relax, linger, and enjoy your dining experience! And it’s always a good idea to call ahead to inquire about their hours of operation in the shoulder season.
